MLB Season 2024: Managerial Shakeups and Stalwarts

As the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season draws to a close, it's been a tumultuous year for several franchises, particularly with managerial positions in flux.

Turbulent Times for Managers

This season has seen three MLB managers relieved of their duties due to underperformance. Pedro Grifol of the Chicago White Sox, Scott Servais of the Seattle Mariners, and David Bell of the Cincinnati Reds were all dismissed as their teams struggled. The changes reflect a broader trend in the league, where expectations are high and patience can be short.

Grady Sizemore has stepped in as the interim manager for the White Sox, though his start has been challenging, with an 8-31 record thus far. In Cincinnati, Freddie Benavides has taken over managerial duties for the Reds, steering the team through the remainder of the season.

Not all managerial changes were due to underperformance. In Miami, the Marlins opted to remove the 2025 club option from Skip Schumaker's contract in early April. Interestingly, Schumaker is the reigning National League Manager of the Year, indicating that his departure was more about foresight than immediate results.

Kim Ng's Departure

Another notable change in Miami was the departure of Kim Ng, the former general manager of the Marlins. Ng's exit marks a significant shift for the franchise as they look ahead to future seasons and restructuring their front office operations.

Rockies' Struggles Continue

In Denver, Bud Black continues to manage the Colorado Rockies, marking his eighth season at the helm. Unfortunately, Black's tenure has been marked by difficulties, and the Rockies are at risk of enduring their second consecutive 100-loss season. Black's overall record with the club stands at 536-652, underscoring the challenges that have accompanied his leadership. Notably, the Rockies have not made a postseason appearance since 2018, leaving fans yearning for a turnaround.

Woes in Toronto

Meanwhile, north of the border, John Schneider's management of the Toronto Blue Jays hasn't met expectations. The team languishes at the bottom of the American League (AL) East standings and opted to become deadline sellers, signaling a focus on the future rather than immediate success.

Cardinals' Resurgence

The St. Louis Cardinals, however, have some reasons for optimism. After a disastrous 91-loss season in 2023, the Cardinals managed to put together a winning campaign in 2024. Oliver Marmol, who managed the Cardinals through their recent struggles, signed a contract extension through 2026 in the spring, cementing his role amid the club's resurgence efforts.

Stalwart Managers Hold Steady

In contrast to the upheavals in several other franchises, several seasoned managers have maintained their positions. Dave Roberts continues to guide the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Aaron Boone remains at the helm for the New York Yankees. Brandon Hyde manages the Baltimore Orioles, further solidifying the continuity in their leadership.

As the 2024 MLB season heads towards its conclusion, the shakeups and continuities in managerial positions reflect the high stakes and dynamic nature of the sport. Teams continuously seek that delicate balance between stability and change, all in the pursuit of on-field success and the ultimate goal of a World Series title.
