Unexpected Journey Begins Anew
As Derrick White stood on the practice courts Sunday, the beginning of another unexpected chapter in his basketball journey was unfolding. His arrival at 2:30 a.m., after a lengthy flight from the United States, was far from the leisurely family vacation in Cabo he had planned. Instead, he found himself once again stepping into the spotlight, called up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard for Team USA.
This moment with Team USA evoked memories of 2019 for White, when a similar situation saw him join the senior team for the World Cup in China at the last moment. Back then, White had been playing with the Select Team and clinched the final roster spot after higher profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew. "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team," he reflected. "I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."
This recent call-up came while White was back in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp. The timing couldn't have been more serendipitous—or perhaps disruptive, depending on the perspective. Nonetheless, it was another testament to White's adaptability and unyielding commitment to the game.
White’s arrival reunites him with Boston Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, as well as former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, now an assistant coach with Team USA. For Tatum, the reunion was a welcome one. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," Tatum remarked with enthusiasm.
Indeed, White’s presence is particularly valuable, coming off a season that saw him sign a lucrative four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Celtics.
