The Anaheim Ducks are making a groundbreaking move in their broadcast strategy by shifting their local game broadcasts to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional local broadcasts. This initiative aims to increase accessibility for fans throughout the expansive Ducks' TV market.
In a move designed to reach more fans, 65 of the Ducks' games next season will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Specifically, these broadcasts will be accessible via Channel 13, providing a significant boost to the team's local television presence.
Moreover, all games will be streamed regionally on the Victory+ streaming service at no cost to viewers. This means that fans can enjoy the free, ad-supported service on the Victory+ platform, which will be available for download on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting from September. This strategic shift underscores the team's commitment to enhancing fan engagement and accessibility.
"We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge," said Ducks president Aaron Teats. "It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms."
This move marks a departure from the Ducks' previous broadcasting arrangement with Diamond Sports Group, whose contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Currently, Diamond Sports Group is entangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas. Despite this, they will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and maintain agreements with other major sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
Partnership with A Parent Media
In an innovative partnership, the Ducks have teamed up with A Parent Media to execute this new broadcasting strategy. According to Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, "The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This collaboration aims to leverage the expertise of the Ducks' management to provide a seamless and enriched viewing experience for fans.
The regional territory for Ducks broadcasts is extensive, covering Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. This vast region ensures that the team’s fanbase will have widespread access to every game, whether through Victory+ or over-the-air broadcasts on Channel 13.
Broadcast Talent and Industry Trends
The Ducks' broadcasting team, featuring Brian Hayward and John Ahlers, will remain intact, ensuring continuity and familiarity for long-time fans. This consistency in on-air talent is expected to maintain the high quality of commentary and insights that Ducks fans have come to appreciate.
Interestingly, the Ducks are not the only NHL team to explore new broadcasting avenues. The Florida Panthers are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, and the Dallas Stars also plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. These trends indicate a broader shift within the NHL toward more flexible and accessible viewing options for fans.
The Ducks’ decision to offer games free of charge across multiple platforms is a testament to their forward-thinking approach. This new strategy seeks not only to solidify the current fanbase but also to attract a new generation of viewers who prefer digital platforms over traditional cable.
As fans anticipate the coming season, the Ducks' commitment to providing free, accessible coverage stands out as a significant organizational priority. Aaron Teats' comments encapsulate this mission: "It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms."
With the promise of a seamless and cost-free viewing experience, the Ducks are poised to set a new standard in sports broadcasting, reflecting their dedication to fan engagement and accessibility in the digital age.
